Do my dependents need to switch VISAs when I do?

When you change your visa, your dependents may also need to update theirs - but it depends on when their current visa expires.

🔍 Step 1: Check Their Visa Expiry Date

Your dependent’s visa is usually linked to the visa you had when they were granted their dependent visa.

  • This means their visa expiry date may be earlier than yours if you switch to a new visa.

You can check this date on:

  • Their visa vignette (sticker) in their passport

  • Their Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

  • Their digital immigration status (UKVI account)

📅 If Their Visa Is Expiring Soon

  • Yes - You should apply for a new dependent visa for them.

If Their Visa Still Has Time Left

  • No - They don’t need to switch visas immediately.

  • You can wait and apply for a new dependent visa closer to their expiry date.

🗓 When to Apply

We recommend starting the application at least 3 months before their visa expiry date to:

  • Avoid last-minute stress

  • Allow time for processing delays

  • Ensure there’s no gap in their UK immigration status

💡 Tip

If you’re unsure whether your dependents need to apply now, it’s best to check their visa dates and contact us so we can advise based on your situation. Please also note:

  • They must meet the requirements for dependents under your new visa type (for example, relationship evidence for partners, proof of dependency for children).

  • If you are being sponsored under SOC codes 6135/6136, there are restrictions to adding dependents to your visa application here. See more here.
